Abstract of the Speech:
Performance of evaporators is seriously deteriorated by formation and
growth of frost on the cold surface. In thispresentation, the concept of the thermal network analysis is going to be
briefly introduced and validity of the technique in predicting the frost growth on cold fins aligned in parallel will be discussed. Variations of the air and the frost layer temperatures along the flow direction were obtained with the mass transfer of water vapor from the air to the frost surface taken into account based on the heat-mass transfer analogy. Then, the time variations of the thickness, density and the surface temperature of the frost layer could be predicted, which agree reasonably well with the measured results. Although the thermal network analysis
shows somewhat lower accuracy compared with that of the full CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) analysis, the technique is much simpler and cost-effective to use. However, to secure the accuracy of the technique, proper choice of the heat and the mass transfer correlations is considered to be essential.
